The idea of a 'base under siege' is an old one in Doctor Who dating back to the mid sixties, but in this case there was no real explination as to what was happening. "Don't touch the water." well, yes, but why? What was in the water, where did it come from and what did it want?
The only shock I got in watching was the dedication to Barry Letts at the end, as I had no idea he had died.
Barry was a major figure in the history of Doctor Who, he took over as producer in 1970 and for the next five years presided over some of the best stories in the programmes history, introducing some of the greatest monsters and villains including the Sontarans and the Master.
He was also responsible for the casting of Tom Baker, arguably the best Doctor so far, and Elizabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith, the longest serving companion.
He directed many Doctor Who stories including the Master's debut: Terror of the Autons and the wonderfully atmospheric The Andriod Invasion, he also co-wrote the classic story The Daemons and wrote two radio stories for Jon Perwee's Doctor in the ninties.
Russel T. Davies, the show's current Lead Writer and Executive Producer said:
"None of us would be here, without Barry's brilliant work in the 1970's. As a child, his show filled my eyes and my heart and my mind; he fostered the imagination of an entire generation, and his work will never be forgotten."
